White Pine Shedding

The evergreen tree in your yard has lots of brown needles and it's shedding them. Is this cause for concern? Generally speaking, no.

Evergreen trees, including pines, hemlocks, spruces, and firs loose their needles periodically. The white pine (Pinus strobus) pictured here has a typical appearance for a tree shedding its needles.

Look for the location and pattern of needles turning brown to put your mind at ease. If the needles are the ones closest to the trunk (oldest needles) and if they are turing uniformly, then it is likely that this the naturally occurring shedding of the needles. It happens after two growing seasons with the white pines.
